ANTI-INFECTIVES

  • Intravenous administration of antibiotic or antifungal medication.
  • Initial dose administered in a controlled clinical setting.
  • Given via peripheral or central venous access.
  • Administered by IV push or via gravity infusion, in some cases infusion pump may be utilized.
  • Can be short term (7-10 days) or long term (4-6 weeks).
  • May require ongoing lab monitoring of drug levels.

 

Indications for Parenteral Administration

  • Severe infections that are not responsive to oral therapy.
  • Acute infections that require rapid drug onset.
  • Chemical properties of the drug require direct delivery into the blood stream.
  • Digestive enzymes cause loss of drug potency when given orally.
